Student Research: Steady Hands
Northern New Mexico College engineering students and Española Valley High School’s (EVHS) Math, Engineering, Science Application (MESA) program are applying the engineering skills they are learning to a project that could significantly improve the lives of Parkinson’s patients. Under the direction and mentorship of Dr. Steve Cox and EVHS teachers Janice Patal-e and Lyne Salero, the students are working to develop a glove that sends electrical impulses through the nerves to alleviate symptoms of the disease.
NNMC Alumnus Hope Lopez Accepted into PhD program
Northern New Mexico College offers extraordinary undergraduate research opportunities. That immersion in world-class research helped Northern alumna Hope Lopez obtain a post-baccalaureate internship at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and enter a PhD program at University of Utah. Hope graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2023. She was applying for master’s programs when The U evaluated her credentials and accepted her into their PhD program instead. She will begin that program in August 2024.
Thank you Mayor Keller for the bus!
Mayor Keller and his team visited Northern and toured campus, engaging with our students in their classrooms and in a panel discussion. He donated a city bus to Northern’s CDL training program and recruited for job opportunities in Albuquerque. In his pitch to students, he talked about how the State of New Mexico’s current revenues are funding projects ranging from road repair to new buildings on college campuses, generating even more demand for workers.
